Do consumers still trust sustainability claims?

Consumers have often taken the “trust but verify” approach to corporate sustainability claims—but in recent years, the number of consumers saying they “usually believe them” has dropped slightly (-3pts from 2021-2023) and skepticism is ticking upward (+2pts from 2021-2023).

Now that many high-profile players have scaled back or abandoned these initiatives, trust could be more precarious than ever.
